Alberta RCM FAQs

Question

Is it mandatory to download from Alberta Education RCM files by individual school? Or can this be done using “All Schools?”

Answer

We very strongly recommend you download the RCM files by individual school. It is, however, possible to download them using "All Schools."

Question

What are the advantages to downloading by individual schools, as opposed to "All Schools?"

Answer

A) During the actual download phase, you are much more likely to get the dates correct when using an individual school. And, what if the dates are not identical across the multiple schools you might want to pull?

Z) When you print the Error Report, you are dealing with just one school's worth of students. The Report is easier to deal with than having your entire Division in a single file.

Question

But I have 20 schools. It is fewer steps to do one download and print one Error Report, rather than 20 different downloads and 20 different Error Reports.

Answer

A. It may be more steps, but each Error Report will be much, much smaller and easier to deal with

B) Divide up the labor; each school staff does their own work.

C) Keep in mind this applies only to high schools. And, only to seniors taking 30-level courses.

Question

What about Edulink?

Answer

Alberta Education discontinued Edulink about three years ago.

Question

Previously, we had to retain our RCM file's name, which Alberta Education created. Otherwise, SIRS wouldn't let it import. I always wondered how SIRS "knew" the necessary name.

Answer

The name doesn't matter; it's the format that counts. Magic.

Question

Can I make multiple downloads?

Answer

Yes. Alberta Education allows for that. They don't care how many times or what filters you put on your data. FYI: The download files from Alberta Education used to be .html files, they are now Excel files.

Question

What do I do with all of these names on the Error Report?

Answer

If you have students on the Report whom you believe should not be, contact Alberta Education Client Services Help Desk  or 780-427-5318 (toll-free access by first dialing 310-0000) The records of students who cannot be resolved with Alberta Education, we regret to inform you, will have to be entered manually.
