GPA and Average Calculation Methods

Overview

This article explains the mathematical calculations available in SIRS to calculate Student Average and to calculate GPA. Keep in mind there is only one difference between an Average and a GPA: Which field is used in the calculation. How the calculations are done is exactly the same for averages and GPA.

  • Grade Legends must be set up if you wish to perform GPA calculations. The GPA Field (or GPA1, GPA 2, etc., depending on the choices you make) in the Grade Legend for the corresponding numeric grade/alpha entered is used in calculations.
  • Grade Legends do not have to be set up for uses the numeric grade entered for a given Report Period, or uses the Final Grade. If Alpha grades are entered, then a Grade Legend is required and average calculations are performed on the Percent Equivalent field. Average averages, unless Alphas are entered.

Average

Straight Average - All courses are weighted equally. Sum (of the grades), divided by the number of grades used.
Credit Earned - Average calculated using the credits earned.
Sum of (grades x credits earned), divided by Sum of credits possible.

Credit Weighted - Average calculated using the credit value of the class. Sum of (grades x credits possible), divided by Sum of  credits possible.
Course Weighted - Average calculated using the course weighting as set up in Courses. Sum of (grades x course weight), divided by sum of course weights.

Course Bonus Weighting - Average calculated using a course bonus weighting. Sum of (grades x course weight), divided by count of all the courses used.
Area Grades/Area Weighted - The average calculated using the area weight as specified on each requirement area as the weight.

GPA

Straight Average - All courses are weighted equally. Sum (of the Grade Points), divided by the number of classes used.
Credit Earned - Average calculated using the credits earned.
Sum
of (Grade Points x credits earned), divided by Sum of credits possible).
